Rooted & Radiant — Brand Identity
Before a first-time client says a word, the brand has to say it for her: you’re safe here.
Meet Dr. Maya Alston, a licensed therapist and somatic healer in Asheville, NC. She works with the mind and body together, gently and at the client’s pace.
Many of her clients are new to therapy, and some reach out on a hard day. In those few seconds, they decide whether a practice feels safe enough to email.
That became the starting point for the brand: feel like a safe place to land.
The brief was simple: warm but not overly feminine, clean but not cold. I knew the brand couldn’t feel too clinical or too much like a spa. Either way, it could lose the person who was looking for help.
Then I looked at the name.
Rooted felt like the ground—safety, steadiness, and the training behind the care.
Radiant felt like the glow—warmth, growth, and the light clients find again.
The name didn’t pick a side, so the brand wouldn’t either.
From there, every decision came back to one question:
Does this ground, or does this glow? And is there enough of both?
Before I sketched anything, I wrote the story behind the brand: “Healing doesn’t happen in pieces — it happens when we come home to ourselves.”
The foundation became four values: compassion, safety, intentionality, and wholeness.
The voice followed three simple rules:
Gentle, not clinical.
Steady, not flat.
Human, not life-coachy.
Those rules became the filter for every color, word, photo, and design choice.
The palette starts with earth colors that carry most of the weight, followed by small touches of sunrise-inspired colors. Mostly ground, a little glow.
Serif type brings warmth and authority, while the sans serif keeps everything easy to read. Textures come from real things like paper, linen, and stone. Photos focus on light, hands, and landscapes—not people in distress.
Then we come back to that person at 11:04 pm, looking through another tab.
She finds warm earth tones. A calm, steady voice. A clear explanation of what happens after she sends an email.
Nothing shouting. Nothing selling.
Just a place that looks like it could hold her. She writes the email. Because in this field, trust is the brief.
Rooted & Radiant is a concept project from my design capstone. Dr. Maya is a persona. The process is the one I use with every client.
